Bayou La Batre

Welcome to Bayou La Batre

Fishing capital of Alabama

Bayou La Batre lies along the Mississippi Sound on the Gulf of Mexico in south Alabama. We are a charming community steeped in Southern history and a heritage with a distinct French impression. Known in the late 1800s and early 1900s as a resort town with medicinal spring water, Bayou La Batre is now the Seafood Capital of Alabama.

You may have heard how we commemorate our fishing industry with annual events such as the Blessing of the Fleet and Taste of the Bayou. Come take a ride down scenic byway 188 as century old oaks graciously welcome you to our city, and in case you don’t hear before you get here, we call home “By-luh-ba-tree.”

A loop of the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail runs through Bayou La Batre. The city’s location near the Gulf of Mexico and Mobile Bay affords many opportunities for swimming, boating, and fishing.
Events include the annual Blessing of the Fleet, which celebrates the town’s fishing industry, in May and the Taste of the Bayou seafood festival in September.
State Highway 188 runs north-south through the city. The Roy E. Ray Airport is located five miles to the northeast of Bayou La Batre

Beautiful Sunsets

From beautiful scenic byways and coastal estuaries, to seafood and shrimp boats, to festivals and fishing village charm, Bayou La Batre is the real deal. Our history and townspeople trace their heritage to the 1700s when settlers petitioned the King of Spain for a piece of land known today as Bayou La Batre—the place we call home.

We’re known for our seafood industry, but we also build ships for everyone from the U.S. Government to Disney’s Black Pearl vessel seen in Pirates of the Caribbean. Our award-winning shipbuilders take pride in their work and are recognized for quality delivery and maintenance worldwide.

Bayou La Batre is a center for shipbuilding. The shipyards are owned and operated mainly by local families such as Gazzier Marine Services, Metal Shark (formerly Horizon Shipbuilding), Steiner Ship Yard, Rodriguez Boat Builders, Master Boat Builders, Williams Fabrication, and Landry Boat Works.

Bayou La Batre is located on Mobile Bay in Mobile County in the southwest corner of the state. It has a mayor/council form of government. Former U.S. surgeon general Regina Benjamin operates a clinic in Bayou La Batre. Bayou La Batre is home to a significant population of Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian immigrants who are involved with the local fishing industry.
The ship featured in the “Pirates of the Carribean” Disney film series, the Black Pearl, was built in a Bayou La Batre shipyard, and the town was made famous as the hometown of a major character in the 1994 film Forrest Gump.
